How to Keep Your Hearing Aids Happy
Long-time hearing aid wearers are well aware of the golden rule of hearing aid care: never delay maintenance, cleanings, and minor repairs. When you're counting on your hearing aid to perform its best, neglecting its needs is a sure way to have it fail at the worst possible moment. The good news is that a few simple daily habits can significantly extend the life of your devices and keep them performing at their best.
1. Wipe Them Down Daily
At the end of each day, use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe down your hearing aids. Earwax and skin debris can accumulate on vents, microphone ports, and receiver openings — and if left uncleaned, these buildups can clog filters and degrade sound quality. This is especially important for wearers who produce more earwax than average. A quick wipe-down takes less than a minute and can prevent a significant amount of damage over time.
2. Remove Batteries Every Night
Even when not in use, hearing aid batteries slowly discharge if left in the device. Removing the batteries each night — and leaving the battery door open — reduces continuous power draw and helps extend both battery life and the lifespan of the electrical components inside your hearing aid. Corrosion from a depleted battery left inside the compartment is one of the most common causes of preventable hearing aid damage.
3. Store Them Properly
Moisture is one of the greatest enemies of hearing aid electronics. When you're not wearing your devices, store them in a dehumidifying dry kit case. These cases draw moisture out of the hearing aids overnight, protecting the delicate internal components from humidity damage. If you don't have a dedicated dry kit, simply leaving the battery door open in a cool, dry place allows some air circulation. Avoid storing hearing aids in the bathroom, where steam from showers can cause gradual moisture damage.
4. Weekly Deep Cleaning
In addition to daily wipe-downs, perform a more thorough cleaning once a week. Use a dry cloth or the small brush that came with your hearing aids to clear wax from filters and crevices. Be gentle — the components are small and delicate. Never use water, cleaning solutions, or alcohol on your hearing aids at home; these can damage the electronics or the casing. For a deeper professional cleaning, bring your devices to our office where we have the proper tools to clean them safely and thoroughly.
The Payoff: Years of Reliable Performance
How long your hearing aids last is largely determined by how well you care for them. Some wearers achieve peak performance for only two to three years; others, through consistent daily maintenance, enjoy a decade or more of reliable use from the same pair of devices. The investment in proper care is small — a few minutes each day — but the return is significant.
